Sombrero de la semana: el canotier//Hat of the week: the straw boater

^[1]Cuenta mi amiga Emirena Tozzi en su libro La Manifattura della Paglia nel Novecento que para elaborar el canotier clásico, de principio del siglo XX, se utilizaba paja trenzada de importación como el rostik japonés. Se cosían las tres partes del sombrero: tapa, copa y ala separadamente; y luego se montaba pegándolas con caucho, lo que hacía que fuera un sombrero bastante pesado. Se adornaba con una cinta de gros gren negro, o en ocasiones, azul o de rayas.

La máquina para coserlo estaba creada específicamente para este tipo de sombrero. El Museo de la Paja ^[3] exhibe, en la sala de máquinas de coser, una colección extraordinaria.

El canotier es un modelo internacional: es el signo distintivo de los gondoleros venecianos y de los colegiales de Oxford. Esta temporada se cuela en nuestro perchero: con un trench beige, una faldita corta y unas medias a media pierna.

My friend Emirena Tozzi writes in her book ‘La Manifattura della Paglia nel Novecento’ that imported plaited straw, like the japanese rostik, was used to created the classic straw boater of the beginning of the 20th century. The three parts of the hat (top, crown and brim) were sewn separately and then stuck together with rubber, which was why the hat was so heavy. The hat was decorated with a black or sometimes blue or striped gros-grain ribbon. The sewing machine had been created specifically for this kind of hat. The Straw Museum has an extraordinary exhibition in the sewing machine room. The straw hat is an international model. It is the trademark of Venetian Gondoliers and Oxford’s students. This season it will be part of our wardrobe with a beige trench coat, a short skirt and stockings.
