Por el mundo consombrero: Colonia//Wearing a hat around the world

Gracia Bocanegra, julio 2010.
I am very much enjoying the fact that many of my readers are taking the opportunity to show off their hats around the world, and so I would like to invite you to take part in this section in which we are going to collect your stories, photos, comments, anecdotes… about the way you wear your hats wherever you go.
Gracia has been living in Cologne for the past few months and has sent us this amusing review: Since winter provides many opportunities to wear a hat, I must say that the great majority of hats I have seen in Cologne are knitted caps. They are puled down low over the head so as to cover the ears like Peruvian or mountain caps. Nevertheless, what caught my attention even more so was the furry pink earwarmers that people use to go jogging. You are a nobody if you don’t go jogging but I decided to keep being a nobody. The ‘alternative’ hats (that’s what I call them) are very eye-catching. Not even London nor New York or wherever, is a more perfect place than Cologne for setting your own trend. I can remember perfectly the first person to premiere this trend, and she didn’t go unnoticed. What a pity I didn’t have a camera in hand! She wore a pale pink tweed jacket, pale pink shorts, green stockings, pale pink trainers, green hair like Dita Von Teese style and a 1950s green felt sailor hat. To tell the truth, despite being a bit outlandish, she was photogenic and very well put together. The hat fitted perfecly with her ringlets and gave her a funny retro style. Anyway, I can’t hide the fact that I’m fond of the ‘typish Deutsche Hütte’, that is, typical German hats, especially from Bavaria. They are made of bottle-green felt and similar to the Borsalino style hat with a ribbon and a pheasant feather for men. These hats for children are softer, with a more rounded form and an interwined fur ribbon. They were sold in all souvenir shops for tourists, a real temptation. I still don’t know what the hat for women is but I promise to find out about it. Before going to Cologne I bought one made of fine felt in bottle-green with a satin flower and ribbon and two thin feathers, with the hope of blending in better in the city. It is the closest I will get to becoming a ‘typisch Bayern Frau’.
Gracia Bocanegra, July 2010.
